Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the Health and Safety Manager to ensure the safety of everyone who enters the company's premises. They are solely responsible for the implementation and ensuring that all the safety regulations are followed. For example, if a plant manufactures a hazardous material, then as a health and safety manager, they are responsible to ensure the safety of the workers by asking them to wear facemasks, goggles and protective clothing. If it is an office, then they are required to maintain safety by assuring that all desk drawers and file cabinets are closed, spills cleaned up and signs posted.
One of the major roles of the Health and Safety Manager is to schedule routine fire drills and also assure that each department designates a person to act as a monitor. They may also have to walk the floor regularly, to check for any violations and also to rectify any problems. Health and Safety training is an issue for all companies and individual employees and applies just as much in the office as it does on the building site.
Every office in the country needs to implement Health and Safety procedures, whether they are in banking or recruitment, IT or even charitable organisations.
Macmillan Cancer Relief is one such charity. For almost 100 years now they have organised events and fund raising activities to finance its research. This has contributed to huge advancements in screening, diagnosis and the treatment of cancer sufferers.
In the first year that the charity operated its information line, they helped over 11,000 people. By 2005, they were paying a total of 3,500 nurses, doctors, radiographers, dieticians and occupational therapist among others. All this with funding entirely from voluntary donations.
With their on-going fight against the disease that as many as one in three of us will be diagnosed with in our lifetime, they are very hot on the fact that office based staff still need to implement Health and Safety procedures. How do they find |
